Description

The dial is painted with an iwa-enogu made from a crushed red mineral called cinnabar. In Japan, cinnabar has been mined since the Jomon period, and used as a sacred material to decorate ancient tombs. Before artificial vermillion was developed, cinnabar was used as a pigment for vermillion lacquer and vermillion ink. Cinnabar was also believed to be a medicine for immortality. It has been highly valued since ancient times.

The body of each Hanamokko table clock is hand carved on a lathe using a traditional technique called rokurobiki in Yamanaka, Kaga, Ishikawa. Yamanaka has a more than 400-year history as a lacquerware production center. The wood is Zelkova, which has a beautiful grain and smooth texture. Please select one of the three available colors from the Wood Color option: Plain, Brown, or Black.

The base of the dial is made of Japanese paper made by Mayumi Ishikawa, a Japanese paper maker in Futamata-cho, Kanazawa. The paper is then coated with layers of iwa-enogu, mineral pigments made from crushed natural stones. The index is made of gold leaf produced in Kanazawa by traditional methods registered with UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
