Hanamokko Clock

The wooden base of a Hanamokko clock is made by Tatsuya Kuzumi, a traditional craftsman from Yamanaka, Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Yamanaka has a more than 400-year history as a lacquerware production center. Each piece is hand carved on a lathe using a traditional technique called rokurobiki.
When visiting Tatsuya’s workshop, it is wonderful to see the delicate shapes being formed by applying a blade to a block of wood. The smooth curves, made possible only through rokurobiki, give a soft and gentle impression that fit easily into any room’s interior.
Hanamokko Clocks are made from Zelkova. Because of its beautiful grain and hardness, Zelkova has been widely used for furniture and construction materials since ancient times. Please enjoy the smooth texture, the flowing grain, and color of the wood which differs with each Hanamokko Clock.

The wooden base comes in three colors:
Plain– for a natural and gentle impression
Brown– for a classic and calm impression
Black– for a sleek and stylish impression

Please choose the color that best suits your room. All Hanamokko Clocks are coated with urethane, which is also used for tableware, to prevent stains and dirt from adhering to the surface.

Plane, Brown, Black

The base of the dial is made of handmade paper created by Mayumi Ishikawa, a Japanese paper maker in Futamata-cho, Kanazawa. The paper is then coated with layers of iwa-enogu, mineral pigments made from crushed natural stones. It takes great skill to apply the course mineral pigments evenly.
Our staff of trained Japanese- style painters who have been using iwa-enogu for over 25 year are in charge of the painting process. The process is a patient one that requires ample drying time between each of the approximately 10 coats of paint.

The indexes, or 12 dots, indicating time are made of gold leaf. Kanazawa produces 99% of all the gold leaf in Japan. The traditional techniques used in making gold leaf are registered with UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
